South Australia’s top boardriding clubs are set to do battle on Saturday, with Waitpinga or Parsons Beaches set to host the sixth State round of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle.
The nationwide celebration of grassroots surfing will see clubs nominate a squad of their six best surfers to compete in an exciting and dynamic format. Each squad will consist of one Under-18 Junior surfer, four Open age surfers, and one Over-35 Masters surfer, with a least one female surfer to be included in the mix.
Three South Australia boardriding clubs will converge on the Fleurieu Peninsula and challenge for $2,000 prize money and the chance to represent their State at the nudie Boardriders Battle National Final in NSW in February 2018.
Defending event champions Seaford Boardriders will spearhead an impressive field of regional clubs competing on the weekend. They will be joined by South Coast Boardriders and Seaview Road Boardriders in what is set to be an awesome display of the depth and talent of local boardriding clubs in SA.
“South Australia has a strong and well supported boardriding club network and the clubs look forward to the opportunity to competing against each other” said Craig Potgieter, Surfing SA’s CEO.
Competition is set to get underway on Saturday morning from 8am with finals concluding in the mid-afternoon. Clean summer-like conditions are forecast at this stage and Waits looks like the most likely venue.
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series will involve more than 60 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in eight state qualifying rounds and will culminate in a National final in NSW in February 2018 for 24 clubs.
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle is officially sanctioned by the World Surf League (WSL), which allows Australian WSL Championship Tour surfers (men and women) the opportunity to represent their local boardriders club at respective state qualifying events as well as the national final.
The purpose of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle program is to build the profile and capacity of community boardriders clubs Australia-wide. In the past four years, Surfing Australia has invested over $600,000 into Surfing Australia affiliated boardriders clubs as part of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle series.
Major sponsors of the 2017/18 series include the naming rights partner nudie and supporting sponsors Oakley, Nikon, Woolworths, Milwaukee, Destination NSW, Newcastle City Council, World Surfaris, World Surf League, mySURF.tv and Surfing Australia.
